How Much Does Tile Removal Cost?

Standard ceramic or porcelain tile removal in Southwest Florida runs $2.50-$4.50 per square foot, according to a February 2026 regional removal cost guide. That's for tile set in a normal thinset bed. Older homes, especially anything built before the 1990s, often have tile set in a thick mortar bed instead, and that pushes removal to $4.00-$6.50 or more per square foot because the mortar bed itself has to be broken up along with the tile.

Angi's 2026 national data puts tile removal at $2-$7 per square foot, averaging around $3.50, which brackets the Southwest Florida range on both ends. The gap between the low and high end almost always comes down to what's underneath the tile, not the tile itself: a thinset bed comes up with a floor scraper and a little muscle, while a mortar bed is closer to demolition work.

Saltillo and Terrazzo: Common in Older Gulf Coast Homes

Sarasota and Manatee County have a lot of housing stock from the 1970s through the 1990s, and two flooring types from that era come up constantly: Mexican saltillo tile and poured terrazzo. Saltillo removal runs $3.50-$6.00 per square foot; terrazzo, which is often bonded directly to the slab and harder to break loose without damaging the concrete underneath, runs $3.00-$5.50 per square foot.

Terrazzo in particular deserves a look before demo. In good condition, some homeowners choose to refinish it rather than remove it, since terrazzo under vinyl or carpet is sometimes original and salvageable. We see this most often on older homes around Venice and inland Sarasota County, where a lot of the original 1970s and 1980s terrazzo is still under a later layer of vinyl or carpet.

What's Included, and What Can Add to the Bill

Our removal pricing covers demo, hauling tile out and disposal. Two things commonly add to the number: leftover thinset that needs to be ground down before new flooring goes on, which runs $0.75-$1.25 per square foot on top of removal, and a slab that isn't flat once the old tile is out, which calls for self-leveling underlayment at $250-$700 per room. Carpet, laminate or a floating floor is cheaper to pull, $1.75-$3.25 per square foot, since there's no thinset or mortar to break up.

It's worth budgeting for at least one of those two add-ons on any tile removal job older than about fifteen years. A slab that's been under tile that long has usually had at least a little settling or a prior repair patch, and thinset residue is nearly universal even on a clean-looking demo. Dust control is worth asking about too: dry-cutting or grinding old tile without containment sends fine dust through the whole house, so larger removal jobs benefit from wet-cutting and containment rather than letting demo dust settle into every room.

Removal is almost always priced alongside the new flooring install rather than as a standalone job, since we're already on-site with the same crew and dumpster.
