What actually makes a floor waterproof?

Rigid-core SPC vinyl plank is built from a stone-plastic composite core, mostly limestone powder bound with PVC, so the plank itself doesn't absorb water the way wood or a wood-based laminate core does. Spill a glass of water on it and wipe it up, and nothing has happened to the plank. Porcelain tile earns the same claim a different way: ANSI A137.1 defines porcelain as tile with water absorption of 0.5% or less under ASTM C373 testing, which is why porcelain specifically, not ceramic in general, carries the PTCA certification homeowners sometimes ask about by name. Water-resistant laminate is a different category, worth not confusing with waterproof. Its core is still wood-based, engineered to slow water penetration at the surface and the joints rather than stop it entirely, so a quick spill wiped up in minutes behaves very differently than standing water left overnight. A dishwasher that's been slowly leaking for a week behind the cabinet toe-kick is the case where that difference shows up: waterproof SPC or tile shrugs it off, while a water-resistant laminate core can start to swell at the joint nearest the leak.

Does waterproof mean it survives a wet slab?

No, and this is where the word gets misused. Most floating LVP and LVT manufacturers still cap the moisture reading they'll accept from a concrete slab at 75% to 85% relative humidity, according to flooring-testing group IFTI. A waterproof plank doesn't remove that limit; it changes what happens if you ignore it. Instead of an adhesive losing its bond, which is what happens with glue-down flooring on a wet slab, a floating waterproof floor over an excessively damp slab traps that moisture underneath it, which can turn into odor and hygiene problems and, eventually, a floor that needs to come back up anyway.

The standard slab moisture test, ASTM F2170, sets probes at 40% of the slab's depth and expects a reading at or below 75% relative humidity unless the manufacturer specifically allows more. We take that reading before quoting waterproof vinyl plank over any slab, new or original to the house, because the product being waterproof doesn't make the reading optional. A slab under a home built in the 1970s or 1980s, common across Sarasota's older neighborhoods, often reads higher than one poured in the last ten years, since building practices and vapor-retarder use under the concrete have changed over that span.

SPC vs WPC: which core makes sense for Sarasota's heat?

SPC (stone-plastic composite) and WPC (wood-plastic composite) are the two rigid-core vinyl plank families, and the difference matters more here than in a milder climate. Does waterproof flooring survive a flood?

Not automatically, and not all of it equally. FEMA Technical Bulletin 2 (January 2025) sorts building materials into flood-damage-resistance classes 1 through 5, and only Class 4 and 5 materials are considered acceptable for use below a building's base flood elevation; not every product marketed as waterproof flooring carries that classification, so it's worth asking for it specifically on a barrier-island or flood-zone job rather than assuming the label on the box covers it.

What about water-resistant laminate?

Laminate's wood-based core means water-resistant is doing real work in that name, and it isn't interchangeable with waterproof vinyl or tile. Mohawk's laminate installation guide requires a moisture barrier over concrete regardless of the laminate's own water resistance, typically a 6-mil polyethylene film with seams overlapped 8 inches for a floating install.
