Is Vinyl Plank Flooring Actually Waterproof?

The plank itself is, in the sense that water sitting on top won't soak into it or swell it the way it would a laminate or wood board. What "waterproof" doesn't cover is the slab underneath. IFTI's guidance on this is specific: most manufacturers of floating LVP and LVT still cap allowable in-slab relative humidity at 75-85%, even for products marketed as fully waterproof. Floating the floor instead of gluing it down doesn't erase that limit, it just moves the failure mode from adhesive bond loss to dimensional problems and hygiene issues if moisture gets trapped underneath long-term.

That distinction trips up a lot of homeowners who assume "waterproof" means the whole assembly, floor and slab together, is immune to moisture. It really only describes the plank's own resistance to water sitting on its surface. What Happens If Water Gets Under It Anyway?

It depends heavily on what kind of water and how long it sat there. After a clean-water event, like a burst supply line rather than sewage backup, click-together vinyl planks can often be lifted, cleaned, dried and re-laid. Any foam pad or cork underlayment underneath should be thrown out rather than reused, and the slab itself needs to be dried and moisture-tested before the same planks go back down. Contaminated water, from storm surge or a sewage backup, is a different situation entirely and usually means the flooring gets replaced rather than salvaged, for hygiene reasons as much as material condition. The subfloor and any baseboard or drywall that got wet needs the same clean-versus-contaminated evaluation, since vinyl is rarely the only material affected once water gets past the surface.

How Fast Do You Need to Act After a Leak or Flood?

The EPA's guidance is blunt on this point: dry water-damaged materials within 24-48 hours to keep mold from establishing, and keep indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally in the 30-50% range. In a closed-up Sarasota house during a summer storm, that window can close faster than people expect, since high outdoor humidity slows natural drying even with fans running. Waiting through a long weekend before pulling up wet vinyl and running dehumidifiers is often the difference between a floor that's salvageable and one that isn't. A wet-dry vacuum and a couple of rented dehumidifiers running overnight is usually enough to buy the time needed to assess the damage properly, and moving furniture off the wet area right away keeps the drying process from getting blocked in the spots that matter most.
